Zethar Weldon Mitchell

September 21, 1905 — November 6, 2002

Asheville - Zethar Weldon Mitchell, 97 of Onteora Blvd died peacefully, Wednesday November 6, 2002 at his home following a period of declining health. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he retired in 1967 from Sayles-Biltmore Bleacheries and also was a builder and carpenter. He was member of Gashes Creek Baptist Church for 74 years where he taught the Mens Sunday School Class for over 35 years. Mr. Mitchell also taught music school at an early age in several churches, loved Gospel Music and was an avid rabbit hunter. He was the son of the late Frank Lot and Maggie Reed Mitchell and the husband of the late Bessie Hogan Mitchell. He was also preceded in death by his son-in-law, Bill J. Benfield; grandson, John Steven Mitchell; 3 brothers and 1 sister. Surviving are his wife, Madelon Young Dotson Mitchell; daughter, Carolyn M. Benfield of the home; sons, James L. Mitchell and wife Frances of Dandridge, Tennessee and Weldon O. Mitchell and wife Mitsn of Laurel, Maryland.; step-daughter, Alice Burrell and husband Jim of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.; 7 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 4 step great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday in the chapel Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Revs Lester Crayton and George A. Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Cane Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
