William Herbert "Herb" Cagle Sr.

Asheville - William Herbert Cagle, Sr., 85, of 9 Oakcrest Place, passed away Friday, April 28, 2006 at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospital Systems following a period of declining health. A native of Spartanburg, SC, he had moved to Buncombe County in 1923. He retired from Carolina Power and Light following 40 years of service, and was a former member of Bingham Heights Baptist Church. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Cagle was the son of the late Joseph Tilden and Alice Fields Cagle, and the widower of Alice Mae Phipps Cagle, who passed away March 25, 1990. He was also preceded in death by a son, William Herbert Cagle, Jr., and four brothers: James, Paul, Boyce and Howard Cagle. Surviving are two daughters: Mary Elizabeth Smith and Susan Elaine Cagle, both of Asheville; a son, Henry Cagle of Asheville; a sister, Margaret Fields of Lillington; 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Tuesday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, with the Rev. Larry Coates officiating. Burial will be in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 7-9 PM Monday at the funeral home.
