ASHEVILLE - WILLIAM GLENN PREACHER KIRBY, 96, OF MOUNTAIN BROOK RIDGE CARE HOME DIED AUGUST 27, 2000. A NATIVE OF CALDWELL COUNTY, HE HAD RESIDED IN ASHEVILLE FROM 1935 TO 1939 AND FROM 1945 UNTIL NOW. HE WAS THE SON OF THE LATE FRANK AND ELIZABETH FLOWERS KIRBY. HE WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HIS WIFE OF 73 YEARS, ESSIE RAE, WHO DIED IN 1996, TWO BROTHERS, TWO SISTERS, TWO SONS, HIS DAUGHTER-IN-LAW, CLARA KIRBY, AND A GRANDDAUGHTER, RHONDA MAYNOR. HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS DAUGHTER, MILDRED AND HUSBAND HARRY FODEN; HIS SON KENNETH, NINE GRANDCHILDREN, DANNY KIRBY AND WIFE PAULA OF VA, DOUGLAS KIRBY AND WIFE LAVERN, PONNIE DAVIS AND HUSBAND, GARY, SHERI RICE AND HUSBAND KEITH, GWEN PHILLIPS AND HUSBAND TONY, LOIS MELTON AND HUSBAND TERRY ALL OF ASHEVILLE, SAM FODEN AND WIFE ALICE OF SNELLVILLE, GA, TOM FODEN AND WIFE MELANIE OF LAFAYETTE, GA, LISA KIDDER AND HUSBAND ED OF TUSCALOOSA, AL. FIFTEEN GREAT GRANDCHILDREN, KELLY, ASHLEY, AND ANTHONY KIRBY, JONATHAN, PATRICK, AND DANIEL DAVIS, TIFFANY GENTRY, TERRI MELTON, KRISTYN PHILLIPS, BETH, ALICIA, AND VICTORIA FODEN, CRYSTAL FODEN, CHRISTOPHER AND DANIEL KIDDER. MR. KIRBY WAS A WELL KNOWN SEWING MACHINE REPAIRMAN. HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE SALVATION ARMY, HAVING SERVED IN SEVERAL LAY POSITIONS INCLUDING TEACHING AN ADULT BIBLE CLASS FOR 25 YEARS. THE FUNERAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD AT 11 AM TUESDAY AT THE SALVATION ARMY, 750 HAYWOOD RD. BURIAL WILL FOLLOW IN GREEN HILLS CEMETERY. MAJOR AL SMITH AND MAJOR LEONARD TAYLOR WILL OFFICIATE. THE PALLBEARERS WILL BE GRANDSONS. THE FAMILY WILL RECEIVE FRIENDS FROM 7 UNTIL 9 PM MONDAY AT ANDERS-RICE FUNERAL HOME
