William Eugene "Bill" Fletcher

July 20, 1931 — May 31, 2020

ASHEVILLE- William “Bill” Eugene Fletcher went home to be with the Lord on the morning of May 31, 2020 at the age of 88. A North Carolina native, Bill was born and raised in Asheville. He was the son of the late Walter B. Fletcher and Elizabeth “Bessie” House Fletcher. Bill was also preceded in death by his brother, Walter B. Fletcher, Jr. Mr. Fletcher served in the United States Navy for eight years. He was in the Korean War and sailed aboard the U.S.S. Juneau. Bill married the love of his life, Betty Fowler, on November 23, 1956. They enjoyed sixty-three years together. Mr. Fletcher is survived by his precious wife, Betty; daughter, Kathy Fletcher McClure; son, Chris Fletcher and wife, Sheila; granddaughter Kandis Deaton and husband, Brian; granddaughter Rebecca Fletcher; three great grandchildren: Jacob, Joseph William, and Hallie Deaton; a brother, Tommy Fletcher and wife, Mabel; and several nieces and nephews. Bill was a beloved member of his church community. He was a faithful member of Trinity Baptist Church for thirty years. Bill and Betty also hold dear to their hearts the Asheville First Church of the Nazarene. Bill loved Jesus and Bible study. His favorite verse was Matthew 4:19 which says “And Jesus said to them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” He loved to talk about how Jesus had saved him and made him a new creation. He will always be remembered for his generosity, being the best fisherman on Earth, his amazing fudge, and being everyone’s “Popa”. The family would like to thank Four Seasons Hospice and Visiting Angels for their compassionate care of Bill and his family. We would also like to thank Chris’s wife, Sheila, and daughter, Rebecca, for their loving care of Popa during the last few weeks of his life. A celebration of Mr. Fletcher’s life will be held at 11 AM Friday, June 5, 2020 at Trinity Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Ralph Sexton, Jr. and Rev. Allen Rash officiating. The family will receive friends following the services at the church. Memorial donations may be made to Four Seasons Hospice, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731, or to Trinity Baptist Church, 216 Shelburne Road, Asheville, NC 28806.
