William Cutler, 91, passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at his home in Hendersonville, North Carolina.
A native of Roosevelt, New York, he was a son of the late Joseph and Helen Back Cutler. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Irwin Cutler.
Bill retired following his many decades career as an aeronautical engineer with Republic Aviation and Grumman Aerospace, (later Northrup Grumman). His most rewarding assignment was being Flight Test Manager for the X29 forward swept wing plane.
Surviving is his wife of 58 years, Isabel Stern Cutler; daughter, Sunny Cutler and husband Steven Jacobs; son, Peter Cutler and wife Inessa; grandchildren: Joshua Jacobs, and Kira Cutler; and niece, June Cutler.
Starting his long and fruitful retirement at age 62, Bill and Isabel moved to Hendersonville, North Carolina, where he was an avid hiker who planned and led hikes in DuPont Forest, Mountains to the Sea off the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Table Rock in South Carolina.
In his well-equipped woodworking shop he crafted items for the home and took on a perpetually growing list of “honey dos”, the most ambitious of which was a sewing room whose design necessitated building and sheet rocking walls. He never feared taking on something he hadn’t done before. Possibly more difficult than building that room, thirteen years ago he built two computers still in use. Adding a 20 foot lean-to greenhouse to their Stony Brook, Long Island home was a major challenge and Isabel’s great joy.
Totally apolitical, he became Precinct Chair of the Henderson County, North Carolina Democratic Party’s Rugby Precinct, when he learned that the current leader had lost his life in a plane crash. He held the job for ten years, after which he was asked to join the Henderson County Board of Elections for which he helped hone a fair and faultless election process.
No services are planned.
