William "Bill" Johnson Marr, Major Usaf (Ret)

August 16, 1942 — November 6, 2022

Asheville – William “Bill” Johnson Marr, Major USAF (Ret), 80, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 6, 2022, at the Smoky Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center in Burnsville.


A native of Hartford, CT he had resided in Buncombe County, NC most of his life. He was the son of the late James Archibald Marr and Marjorie Johnson Marr. He was also preceded in death by his beloved pomeranian, Chloe.


Major Marr was drafted into the U.S. Army and later completed his bachelor’s degree with the University of Connecticut (UCONN) and began a 20-year career with the U.S. Air Force. After retirement from the Air Force, he became an insurance agent and was certified as a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC). He was also a long-time member of Rotary International and the West Asheville Rotary Club. He loved the Lord and his family; he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.


Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 57 years, Judith Allard Marr; sons: William “Jay” Johnson Marr, Jr. and wife Leticia, and Christopher David Marr and wife Heather; grandchildren: Jesse Marr, Nicole Battistessa and husband Jake, Noah Marr and wife Fiona, Elijah Marr, Cassidy Kall, Isaac Marr, and Sawyer Marr; great-grandchildren: Noah Battistessa and Maya Battistessa; sisters: Doris Poirier, and Virginia Connell and husband Dave; and several nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.


A celebration of Major Marr’s life will be held at 2 PM on Friday, January 20, 2023, at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain. Military funeral honors will be conducted by the U.S. Air Force.
