Asheville - Wiley Hardin Griffin, 80, of 377 Riverview Dr. died Monday, November 25, 2002 at the VA Medical Center, Asheville. A native of Madison Co., he had resided in Buncombe Co. for most of his life. He was a retired firefighter with the Oteen VA Hospital Fire Department and he attended Biltmore Holiness Temple. Mr. Griffin was a veteran of the US Marine Corp serving during WW II aboard the USS New Mexico. He was a paratrooper and saw action at Midway Island and the Coral Sea. He was the son of the late Gaither E. and Rebecca Shelton Griffin. He was also preceded in death by his son, Michael Wiley Griffin, and a granddaughter, Leslie Kaye McFee. Surviving are his former wife and mother of his children, Mary E. Tate of Canton; daughters, Sandra Perrigo of Candler and Donna Coates and husband Sam of Reidsville; grandchildren, Wesley R. McFee, Brian D. McFee, Kimberly Bird, Penni Bohnsack, Kevin Coates and Candace Feit; great grandchildren, Bradley McFee, Bailey McFee, Joshua Griffin Bird, Joseph, Brenna and Zachary Feit; brother, Grover Griffin; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Andrew McCray and Bob and Paula Anders. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Wednesday in the Anders-Rice Funeral Home Chapel with Artis Bush and Rev. Dennis Thurman officiating. Burial will be in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory with honors to be conducted by the NCDMV Enforcement Section and the Asheville High US Marine Corp JROTC. The family will receive friends from 11 AM - 12 noon Wednesday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at his residence. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit # 2, P.O. Box 19773, Asheville, NC 28815 for the Wiley Griffin Fund to assist local veterans.
