Candler Wiley C. Carpenter, 77, of 10 Otter Lane, passed away Thursday, November 13, 2014 at the John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center. A native and resident of Haywood County, he moved to Buncombe County in 1976. He was a Radio Announcer for WWNC Radio for 34 years, was a graduate of Canton High School that won the 1956 NC State Championship and served in the US Army. Mr. Carpenter was a son of the late William Fred Carpenter and Berta Christine Hendrix Carpenter and was also preceded in death by his daughter, Melody Carpenter; brother, Edward Carpenter and sister, Barbara Fish. Surviving are his wife of 31 years, Mary Ruth Fox Carpenter of the home; son, Grant Carpenter of Canton; granddaughter, Sloan Carpenter; step sons, Brian Cantrell of Knoxville, TN and Tony Cantrell of Candler; step grandchildren, Brianna Cantrell, Connor Cantrell, Jon Noah Cantrell, Emanul Cantrell and Gabriel Cole Cantrell; brother, Charlie Carpenter of Dunn; brother-in-law, William Fox, Jr. of Asheville and several nieces and nephews, including his special niece, Misty Parris. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, November 16, 2014 at Anders-Rice Funeral Home chapel with Dr. Anthony Burnett officiating. Burial will follow in Sunny Point Baptist Church Cemetery.
