W.D. Metcalf

Weaverville Waldemar Dan "W.D." Metcalf, 93, of 36 Salem Church Road, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at the John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center. A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was Owner & Operator of Metcalf Building & Realty, Inc. and was former Owner & Operator of Ossie Metcalf Milling Company of the Forks of Ivy and Metcalf Lumber Company in Candler. He was a longtime member of the former West Asheville Kiwanis Club where he formerly served as President and on numerous Boards. He was a Mason, a member of the VFW Post #891, a member of the Asheville Home Builders Association of which he was honored in 1992 as Builder of the Year and recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, a member of Second Chances at the YMCA and was a U.S. Army veteran during WWII where he was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Mr. Metcalf was a son of the late Ossie and Maud Savannah Anderson Metcalf and husband of Willie Mae Chambers Metcalf who died November 3, 1992. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Oscar Metcalf and his wife, Irene and brother-in-law, Paul Ramsey. Surviving are his companion for over 16 years, Hilda Williams of Asheville; sister, Margaret Ramsey of Weaverville and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2:30 P.M. Saturday, May 25, 2013 in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. John T. Tiller and Rev. Kevin Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in Forks of Ivy Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:15 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home.
