Asheville – Wanda Marie McElrath Stamey, 76, passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at her residence.
A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, she was a daughter of the late Ernest McElrath and Ruth Davis McElrath of Candler. Her mother's family ran the Davis Store on the Pisgah Highway. Wanda graduated from Enka High School on 6/4/1964 and kept in touch with many of her classmates.
She was generous with her cards and letters–all of which showed off her perfect penmanship–and she absolutely loved talking on the telephone. Wanda was always elegantly dressed with a passion for clothing and little sportscars, like the Miata she just loved driving.
Wanda worked for the American Enka Corporation for a decade and was a proud longtime resident of the Beverly Hills neighborhood in East Asheville, where she was close with multiple neighbors.
Surviving are her brother, Ernest McElrath, Jr. ; sister, Ann Isbell and cousins, Joan Hanks and Anna Hanks and their families.
A graveside service will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Candler.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Bumcombe County Schools Foundations program in her honor, to support scholarships and resources for local children in need.
