ASHEVILLE - WALTER LORON JACKSON, 77, OF 325 CHURCH ROAD DIED TUESDAY JUNE 5, 2001 AT PISGAH MANOR HEALTH CARE CENTER AFTER A PERIOD OF DECLINING HEALTH. A NATIVE OF BUNCOMBE COUNTY, HE HAD LIVED AND WORKED IN SEVERAL STATES BEFORE RETURNING HOME IN 1985. HE WAS THE FORMER OWNER AND OPERATOR OF GARRISON AND JACKSON ESSO SERVICE CENTER AND RETIRED FROM THE V.A. IN 1986. HE WAS A 1941 GRADUATE OF CANDLER HIGH SCHOOL AND FURTHERED HIS EDUCATION WITH THE U.S. NAVY IN JACKSONVILLE, FL AND WAS A WWII VETERAN OF THE U.S. NAVY. HE EARNED HIS PRIVATE PILOTS WINGS IN ATLANTA, GA. HE WAS A SON OF THE LATE CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS AND DELLA BLANKENSHIP JACKSON AND WAS ALSO PRECEDED IN DEATH BY TWO BROTHERS, R.C. AND ROBERT JACKSON. SURVIVING ARE HIS WIFE, BETTY RHODES JACKSON OF THE HOME; DAUGHTERS, SHERRY HOLLAND AND HUSBAND MIKE WHO ARE MISSIONARIES IN CARACAS, VENEZUELA AND SHEILA POMARICO AND HUSBAND VICTOR OF MT. PLEASANT, PA.; SONS, MARK JACKSON AND WIFE ANNE OF CINCINNATI, OH., DANNY LEE JACKSON OF THE HOME AND CHRIS JACKSON AND WIFE SANDY OF GREENSBORO; SISTERS, BETTIE J. WRIGHT OF CANDLER AND ANN CRISP OF ASHEVILLE AND 12 GRANDCHILDREN. FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT 11:00 A.M. FRIDAY AT ANDERS-RICE FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL WITH THE REV. LARRY SPRINKLE OFFICIATING. BURIAL WILL BE IN THE WESTERN CAROLINA STATE VETERANS CEMETERY WITH MILITARY RITES CONDUCTED BY THE BUNCOMBE COUNTY VETERANS COUNCIL VOLUNTEER MEMORIAL TEAM. THE FAMILY WILL RECEIVE FRIENDS FROM 7 TO 8:30 P.M. THURSDAY AT ANDERS-RICE FUNERAL HOME. MEMORIALS MAY BE MADE TO HOMINY BAPTIST CHURCH, 135 CANDLER SCHOOL RD., CANDLER N.C., OR TO VICTORY BAPTIST CHURCH, OLIVETTE RD., ASHEVILLE, N.C. 28804
