Hendersonville -Walter Reed Boland, 80, of Hendersonville, passed away September 26, 2010. Walt was born August 28, 1930, in Detroit, Michigan, to Walter and Lucille Boland and grew up in Ferndale, a suburb of Detroit. He attended the University of Michigan and then served in the U.S. Army in Alaska during the Korean War. After completing his service, Walt returned to school and obtained his doctorate from the University of Michigan in sociology. Walt taught sociology at Bowdoin College in Maine and the University of Connecticut before joining the faculty at the University of North Carolina, Asheville in 1970, where he remained until his retirement in 1995. Walt served on the Asheville City Council during the 1980s. Walt is survived by his wife Nancy Cory Boland, his first wife Margaret Jean Peg Boland, his two children, Kevin Christopher Boland and Stacy Lynne Boland Doane, Nancys three children, Whitlock Lees, Patricia Lees, and Caroline Cory Yarnall, and his grandchildren Michael Scott Boland and Jonathan Christopher Boland. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, October 1, 2010, in the chapel of the Anders-Rice Funeral Home in Asheville to be conducted by Alex Viola of Saint John of the Wilderness Church in Hendersonville.
