Verdelle Lester Buice

June 20, 1916 — October 3, 2001

Swannanoa - Verdelle Lester Buice, 85, of Swannanoa died Wednesday, October 3, 2001 at the Asheville V.A. Medical Center following a period of declining health. A native of Augusta, Georgia. He had resided in Bamberg, S.C. for most of his life prior to moving to Asheville in June of 1992. Mr. Buice retired in 1966 from Dupont after many years of service and was a professional barber. He was a member of Westwood Baptist Church where he was a member of the Clyde Freeman Sunday School Class and a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during W.W. I I. He was an avid golfher and a past member of the Buncombe County Golf Course. He was a son of the late Thomas L. and Maggie Mae Johnson Buice and the husband of 55 years to Patsy Pearle Buice who died in 1992. Surviving are his wife, Martha Calloway Buice of Asheville; sons, Bud Buice and wife, Karel of Swannanoa and Robert Buice and wife, Annette of Georgetown, S.C. daughter, Heather Richter and husband, Dennis of Trego, Wisconsin; stepson, Mike Calloway of Asheville; brother, James Buice and wife, Ruby of Williston, S.C.; sisters in law, Alice Wood of Goose Creek, S.C. and Helga Black of Valdosta, Georgia; nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and several nieces & nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Anders-Rice Funerl Home with the Rev. Carson Moseley, Mr. Raymond Tweed and Mr. Calvin Patterson officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to the service hour and at other times his wife will be at 58 Branning Street, West Asheville. A second visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at Cooners Funeral Home in Bamberg, S.C. Masonic Graveside rites will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday at South End Cemetery in Bamberg by the Ornan Masonic Lodge # 38 of which he was a member for 55 years.
