ASHEVILLE - VERA BELLE BROWN SPIVEY, 96, OF W.N.C. BAPTIST HOME, DIED SATURDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2000. A LIFELONG RESIDENT OF BUNCOMBE COUNTY. SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF THE LATE J. FLOYD BROWN AND LENORA ELIZABETH LYERLY BROWN. SHE WAS THE WIFE OF THE LATE ARDEL J. SPIVEY WHO DIED IN 1975 AND WAS ALSO PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HER SISTER, GRETA BROWN KLEZMER FORMERLY OF SAN FRANCISCO, CA. AND HER BROTHER, REV. DR. W. HERBERT BROWN FORMERLY OF BRYSON CITY. SHE HAD RETIRED FROM THE AIR WEATHER SERVICE IN APRIL, 1968 AFTER 25 YEARS OF SERVICE. MRS. SPIVEY WAS THE OLDEST MEMBER OF CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH WHERE SHE TAUGHT 43 YEARS IN PRIMARY DEPARTMENT AND SUNG IN THE ADULT CHOIR . SHE WAS A MEMBER OF THOMS REHABILITATION AUXILIARY AND THE W.N.C. RESCUE MISSIONS AUXILIARY. SHE WAS A 1921 GRADUATE OF YANCEY COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE IN BURNSVILLE WHERE SHE WAS SALUTATORIAN. SURVIVING ARE HER DAUGHTER AND SON IN LAW, JEAN AND DON ERNST OF ASHEVILLE; SON AND DAUGHTER IN LAW, JACK AND LYNDA SPIVEY OF ASHEVILLE; SISTER, SARA BROWN AUSTIN OF ASHEVILLE; GRANDCHILDREN, RICK SPIVEY, JON SPIVEY, REBECCA SMITH, RON ERNST, RANDY ERNST AND LARRY ERNST; FOUR GREAT GRANDCHILDREN AND ONE GREAT GREAT GRANDDAUGHTER, NINE NIECES AND SIX NEPHEWS. SHE HAD A SELFLESS LOVE FOR OTHERS. HER DEVOTION AND SERVICE TO FAMILY, FRIENDS AND CHURCH DEMONSTRATED HER STRONG CHRISTIAN FAITH. FUNERAL SERVICE WILL BE 2 P.M. WEDNESDAY IN THE ANDERS-RICE FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL WITH THE REV. BUDDY CORBIN OFFICIATING. BURIAL WILL BE IN GREEN HILLS CEMETERY. PALLBEARERS WILL BE HER GRANDSONS AND GRANDSON IN LAW. THE FAMILY WILL RECEIVE FRIENDS 7 TO 8:30 P.M. TUESDAY AT THE FUNERAL HOME.
