West Asheville Velma Ann Candler passed away Friday, January 17, 2014. She was 93 years old. Velma was born on Prices Creek in Yancey County in 1920 and moved to Asheville in 1934. She was the daughter of the late Tom and Stella Elkins Jones. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Talmadge Davis, her second husband, Floyd Candler, her brothers, Arnold and Ted Jones, beloved nephew, Jim Jones and sisters-in-law, Eloise Jones, Katherine Davis and Mabel Crawford. Velma was a long time member of Craven Street Baptist Church, which eventually became Westwood Baptist Church in West Asheville. She worked at Guy Pooles and later the Terry Company. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening, reading her Bible and spending time with those she loved. One of her biggest pleasures was hosting family get-togethers at her lovely home on Richland Avenue. Surviving relatives include niece, Martha Baldwin and husband Mike of Black Mountain; niece by marriage, Kathryne Jones of Asheville; nephews, Eddie Jones and wife Janet of Asheville, Tom Jones and wife Bonnie of Black Mountain and Paul Jones and wife Sarah of Lake Junaluska; sons-in-law, Lewis Candler and wife Marie of Asheville and Loyd Candler and wife Barbara of Elizabethtown, Kentucky and sister-in-law, LaVerne Jones of Black Mountain. Visitation will be at Anders-Rice Funeral Home in West Asheville from 1 to 2 PM Sunday, January 19, 2014 followed by a private burial at Green Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Marjorie McCune Center, 101 Lions Way, Black Mountain, NC 28711. Velma has been receiving lots of hugs and excellent care there for the past three and a half years. The family extends thanks to them and also to CarePartners Hospice of Asheville.
