Ulus Curtis Bishop

Alexander Ulus Curtis Bishop, 82, of 205 Fletcher Martin Road, passed away Monday, October 24, 2005 following a period of declining health. A native of Crewe, VA, he grew up in Madison County, and had resided in Buncombe County since 1945. He retired in 1985 from the NC State Highway Department, where he was employed for 36 years. He was a former member of Grandview Baptist Church, and a member of French Broad Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon since November of 1968 and the current Chairman of the Deacons since the 1970s. Mr. Bishop was the son of the late Jess Andrew and Bertha Queen Rice Bishop. He was also preceded in death by his brothers: Tommy Bishop, Clee Othor Bishop, and James Ople Bishop; and a sister, Ida Lee Bishop. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Essie Marie Haney Bishop, whom he married on June 2, 1945; two daughters: Teresa Marie McPeters and husband Roy McPeters and Vivian Sheila Malone and husband Ron Malone, all of Alexander; three grandchildren: Natalie McPeters, Nathan Malone, and Carrie Malone; sisters: Asaleen Rogers of Asheville, and Easter Jane Hendrix of Alexander. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Thursday at French Broad Baptist Church with Rev. Dean Haney and Rev. Denver Haney officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 PM Wednesday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home and at other times the family will be at the home.
