Theodore Francis "Ted" Smoak

February 23, 1925 — January 10, 2007

Candler - Theodore Francis Ted Smoak, 81, passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2007 at the VA Medical Center following a period of declining health. A native of Yonges Island, SC, Mr. Smoak had resided in Buncombe County since 1988. He retired as an automobile dealer of 30 years. Mr. Smoak was an avid boater, fisherman, hunter, and horseback rider. He served in the US Army, 41st Infantry Division, 333 Signal Corp. during World War II. He was a loving husband, parent and grandparent that will greatly missed. Mr. Smoak was the son of the late Walter Henry and Anna Lefvendahl Smoak. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Weatherford Smoak, of the home; daughters: Diane Smoak of Asheville and Frances Smith and husband James A. Smith of Illinois; grandchildren: Christopher Smith, Jeffrey Smith, and Leia Smith, all of Illinois, and Kevenn Smith of Ohio; 2 great-grandchildren; and sisters: Valerie Robbins of Murfreesboro, TN and Betty Gay Smoak of Charleston, SC. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 Tuesday in the chapel of the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, with Chaplain Richard Rockwell officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Memorial Team. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Monday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.
