Lake Lure - Sphinx Rand Swaringen, Sr., 63, of Rt. 1 Boys Camp Road died Saturday, March 16, 2002 at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock following a brief illness. A native and resident of Rutherford County for most of his life. He was formerly employed at Steelcase. In his earlier years he was a former Motorcycle Police Officer with the city of Shelby. He later joined the Rutherford County Sherriffs Department as a Deputy Sherriff and in 1973 he joined the city of Lake Lures Police Department where he served as Chief of Police until December of 1983. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and had served in the United States Air Force. He was a son of the late Joseph Clifton Swaringen and Vera Vivian OConner Swaringen. Surviving are his daughter, Laura Ann Swaringen of Hendersonville; sons, Sphrinx Rand Swaringen, Jr. of Spruce Pine and Byron Kent Swaringen of Fingerville, S.C.; grandchildren, Jeromy Rand Swaringen, Samantha Rae Swaringen, Whitney Marie Swaringen and Robert Christopher Johnson; sisters, Fraulein Beio of Greensboro and Mary Elsner of Chattanooga, Tennessee; brother, Joe R. Swaringen of Greensboro; Aunt, Marjorie Wallen of Rutherfordton; Aunt Nell Bridges; 8 nieces and nephews. No services are planned. Memorials may be made to the Elizabeth House, %Four Seasons Hospice, P.O. Box 2395, Hendersonville, N.C. 28793. Anders-Rice Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
