Asheville Samuel Frank Sam Penland, 80, of 225 Emma Road, passed away Sunday, August 26, 2007 at his residence with his family and friends by his side. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, Mr. Penland was a retired Real Estate Broker and Accountant. He served in the South Pacific with the US Marine Corps during World War II. Mr. Penland was the son of the late Richard Newton and Estoy Haynes Penland. He was also preceded in death by his son, Samuel Frank Penland, Jr.; sister, Betty Jo Penland May and brothers, Richard Floyd Penland and D.C. Penland. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Pauline Garren Penland, of the home; sister-in-law, Hazel M. Penland of Woodfin; and a number of nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Wednesday in the chapel of the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with the Buncombe County Veterans Memorial Team conducting services and military honors. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 PM Tuesday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to Mountain Area Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.
