Sallie Anne Young, a retired Biology teacher and longtime resident of Knoxville Tennessee, died August 30, 2021 at the age of 82. Sallie is preceded in death by her father, Lowry Young, Sr; mother, Anne Lou Young; sister-in-law, M.“ Carolyn“ Young; nephew, Eric B. Young; best friend, Sandra Cottrell. Sallie was born in Asheville N.C. to Lowry R. and Anne Young. Several years later the family moved to Bulls Gap Tennessee, and then to Knoxville Tennessee where she finished high school and proceeded to earn her degree from the University of Tennessee in Biology/Education and later her Masters. Sallie became a devoted and well-respected Biology teacher at Fulton High School in Knoxville, Tennessee where she later retired. Sallie’s passion in life was to always help others. She was the head of the outreach committee of Northside Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where she attended for the last 15 years. She always found time to volunteer, whether it was helping at the food pantry, driving cancer patients to their appointments, or selling pecans every Christmas to raise money for her church. She also volunteered for the “Fantasy of Trees” every Christmas to help raise money for East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. She was a former member/Treasurer of the Pilot club, as well as, an active member of Christians Women’s Fellowship. Sallie was Secretary for the Knox County Retired Teachers Scholarships Foundation and an active member in the Knox County Retired Teachers Association. The Excellence In Teaching Award at Fulton High School was named in honor of her. Sallie loved to travel and any chance she had she would get together with friends and take a cruise to somewhere overseas. She was an avid crossword puzzle solver, as well, she made the best chicken and dumplings ever. Sallie is survived by her brother, Dr. Lowry R. Young, Jr.; nephew, Lowry R Young III; niece, Rebecca A. Young; nephew, Andrew C. Young; great nephews, Andrew T. Young, Christian L. Young; great niece, Kathryn L. Young. Family will receive friends from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Wednesday September 15th at Stevens Mortuary in Knoxville, Tn. Family and friends will meet at 1:15 p.m. Friday September 17 at Anders-Rice Funeral Home in Asheville, North Carolina to go in procession to Green Hills Cemetery for a 2:00 p.m. graveside service and interment with Pastor Frits Havercamp officiating. Due to the spread of Covid-19, the family request that all attendees wear a face mask and observe social distancing guidelines. Pallbearers: Andrew C. Young, Harry Jenkins, Rick Wilen, Scrappy Wolfe, and George Wiley.
