Ruth B. Fisher

Lenoir – Ruth Mildred Baker Fisher, 98, died Monday, January 30, 2023, at the Shaire Assisted Living Center near Lenoir, NC. Born on March 27, 1924 in Madison County, Mrs. Fisher lived most of her adult life in Buncombe County until moving to the Shaire Center in July of 2021.

Mrs. Fisher was a daughter of the late Levy Elmore and Carrie Cleo Massey Baker of Madison County, and wife of the late James Frank Fisher for 59 years. She was the youngest remaining sibling of six children, including a sister, the late Geraldine Wilde and four brothers, the late Alvish Baker, Harold Baker, Leonard Baker and Ralph Baker.

She is survived by her son, the Rev. Dale Fisher and wife, Barbara of Hudson; three grandchildren, Matthew Fisher and wife, Crispin of Seattle, WA, Jonathan Fisher of Charlotte, NC, and Ashley Chastain and husband, Kyle of Concord, NC, and their sons and her great grandsons, Hudson and Oliver. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Averyl Baldwin and several nieces and nephews.

She worked for many years for the N.C. Extension Service and Agricultural Stabilization Service, the N.C. Department of Public Instruction, and as a co-owner of the Fisher Monument Company in Asheville. She was a graduate of Mars Hill Junior College.

She was an active member of Victory Baptist Church, and later, Merrimon Avenue Baptist Church in Asheville. As a resident of the Shaire Center, she faithfully attended the worship services and Bible studies provided there.

The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at Anders-Rice Funeral Home in Asheville, officiated by her son. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service in Green Hills Cemetery.
