Roy Allen Smith, Sr.

July 28, 1942 — February 22, 2025

Leicester

Roy Allen Smith, Sr., 82, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at Mission Hospital.

 A native and lifelong resident Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Roy and Beatrice McCarson Smith. He was also preceded in death by his sisters: Sandra Sisco, and Hazel Goodwin; brother, Ted Smith; sister-in-law, Shirley Smith; brother-in-law, Zack Embler; and nephew, Kevin Smith.

 Roy was a Fireman with the Asheville Fire Department from 1966 through 1980, and later worked for Taylor and Murphy heavy equipment haulers until his retirement. He was a “Jack of all trades” and could do anything, and enjoyed using his skills to help all his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.

 Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 62 years, Mary Cagle Smith; daughter, Beatrice Mae Dawson; son, Roy Allen Smith, Jr.; grandchildren: Samantha Sanford, Stephen Dawson, and Christopher Dawson; four great-grandchildren; siblings: Gladys Embler, Jimmy Smith, Dell Sams and husband Ivan, Terry Smith, and Sherry Worley and husband Dean; and by many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 1 PM on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. 

The family will receive friends from 11:30 AM until 12:30 PM on Tuesday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.

 In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the family to help with funeral expenses, care of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, 1428 Patton Avenue, Asheville, NC 28806.

 Anders-Rice Funeral Home and Cremation Center is honored to serve the Smith family.
