Asheville - Roy J. Cooper, 60, of 4 Mossy Stone Way died Thursday January 8, 2009 at the Mission Campus of Memorial Mission Hospital. A native of Macon County, he was a life long resident of Buncombe County. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War having received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal. He was the former manager of Cashwell Appliance Parts. He was a son of Clayton Cooper of Asheville and the late Betty Sue Dills Cooper. In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife Bessie Carver Cooper of the home; son, Anthony Scott Cooper of Asheville; grandsons, Jennings Eli Cooper and Erish Layson Cooper and his brothers, Gary M. Cooper and wife Mary Ellen of Highlands and Steve Cooper and wife Elaine of Candler. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Pastor Keith Watkins officiating. Burial will be in the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home.
