Robert Eskridge

Asheville – Robert Edmund Eskridge was born April 7, 1942 in Charleston SC . He died September 20th 2023 in Asheville, NC where he and his wife Gloria had made their home for many years.


Bert grew up in an Air Force Military Family and traveled to many places during his youth, including 2 years in Japan. Bert graduated from High School in Fort Worth, Texas. He received a BS degree in Math from the College of Charleston in SC. He got his MS degree in Math from the University of Nebraska. He attended Texas A&M where he received a PhD in Meteorology. He served 4 years in the USAF and was discharged as a Captain. He was employed by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and was the author of numerous scientific papers in the area of Upper atmospheric world weather. He was a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that received the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Al Gore. Bert made several trips to China where he worked with Chinese Scientists concerning international weather data. He was an avid windsurfer and sailing enthusiast. He was an animal lover. He and his wife Gloria rescued many animals over the years.


He was predeceased by his father, Lt Colonel Charles D Eskridge Jr and his mother Lois Lavender Eskridge of Hanahan SC, His sister June E Mullins of Claremore, OK and nephew Patrick Clancy of Claremore, OK.


He is survived by his wife Gloria Weaver Eskridge and dear friend Tim Owens of Asheville, NC.; sister, Evelyn Deak (Raleigh, NC); brother, Dr Charles D Eskridge III and his wife Theresa (Columbia, SC); nephews: Robert and Joe Deak, Chip, James, John, and Paul Eskridge; nieces: Pam Calloway, Valerie Bruffet, Lois Millie Deak, Ashley E Lowther, Amanda Eskridge, and Karen Maisonave; and 20 grandnieces and nephews .
