Rita Mashburn Knighten

Rita Mashburn Knighten, 66, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 16, 2024, at the Emerald Ridge Rehabilitation and Care Center.

A native of Haywood County, she resided in Buncombe County most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Wesley Phillip Mashburn and Annette Worley Sizemore. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Randy Phillip Mashburn; nephew, Henry Morrow; cousin, Daryl J. Mashburn; and beloved dogs: Baby and Duke.

Rita retired from the Buncombe County School System following more than 20 years of service. She began working for the school system in 1992 in the cafeteria and then onto driving a bus for Haw Creek Elementary School. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Surviving are her children: Kristi Wyatt and husband Michael; and Tim Knighten; grandchildren: Taya Marie Kanupp and husband Brandon, Wesley Phillip Anthony Wyatt, and Leila Ruth Wyatt; great-granddaughter, Olivia Marie Kanupp; sister, Regina Wood; brother, Richie Mashburn; nieces and nephews: Kevin, Heather, Brittany, Randy, and Lachelle; special cousin, Ronnie V. Mashburn; and beloved dog, Daisy.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at a later date.
