REV. NATHAN PENLAND, SR. WENT TO BE WITH HIS LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST ON NOVEMBER 19, 2000. REV. PENLAND WAS THE YOUNGEST SON OF THE LATE WILLARD AND MARY PENLAND FORMERLY OF PAINT GAP, NORTH CAROLINA. REV. PENLAND RECEIVED HIS COLLEGE EDUCATION FROM TOCCOA FALLS COLLEGE AND THE UNIVERSITY OF GOERGIA. HE WAS ORDAINED AS A MINISTER IN THE CHRISTIAN AND MISSIONARY ALLIANCE CHURCH IN 1942 AND HAS SERVED AS A PASTOR AND EVANGELIST FOR MORE THAN SIXTY (60) YEARS. REV. PENLAND PASTORED CHURCHES IN ONEONTA AND BESSEMER, ALABAMA; ROME AND HARTWELL, GEORGIA; WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA; AND ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA. HE WAS PASTOR OF THE ASHEVILLE GOSPEL TABERNACLE (NOW FIRST ALLIANCE CHURCH) FOR 11&1/2 YEARS AND DURING THAT TIME TAUGHT THE SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON AT THE WESTGATE DRIVE-IN CHURCH, WESTGATE SHOPPING MALL IN ASHEVILLE. HE ALSO TAUGHT THE SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON EACH SUNDAY OVER RADIO STATION WISE DURING HIS YEARS AS PASTOR AT THE GOSPEL TABERNACLE. THE MORNING SERVICES OF THE GOSPEL TABERNACLE WERE ALSO BROADCAST LIVE EACH SUNDAY OVER RADIO STATION WFGW. IN THE YEARS IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING HIS MINISTRY AT THE GOSPEL TABERNACLE HE SERVED AS A NATIONAL EVANGELIST WITH THE CHRISTIAN AND MISSIONARY ALLIANCE. AS A SPEAKER AND VOCALIST, REV. PENLAND MINISTERED IN CHURCHES, CAMPS, AND BIBLE CONFERENCES OF DIFFERENT DENOMINATIONS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES, CANADA, WEST AFRICA, EUROPE, JAPAN, HONG KONG, THAILAND, MALAYSIA, AND THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS, REV. PENLAND SERVED AS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ALUMNI AFFAIRS AT TOCCOA FALLS COLLEGE, TOCCOA, GA., AND WAS A MEMBER OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE BOARD OF THE COLLEGE. IN 1983, REV. PENLAND WAS APPOINTED BY THE COLLEGE BOARD OF TURSTEES TO SERVE AS THE FIRST OFFICIAL EVANGELIST OF THE COLLEGE. MOST RECENTLY, REV. PENLAND RETIRED AND HAS SUPPLIED IN PULPITS THROUGHOUT THE SOUTHEASTERN USA IN CHURCHES OF VARIOUS DENOMINATIONS. HE ALSO HAS SERVED AS CHAPLAIN AT THE HILLS AT AVERYS CREEK AND THE ASHEVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT. REV. PENLAND IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE OF SIXTY (60) YEARS, SALLIE MANGHAM PENLAND OF FAIRVIEW. HIS DAUGHTER AND FOUR SONS SURVIVE HIM: MRS. PEGGY TOWNS OF CHARLOTTE, N.C.; REV. NATHAN PENLAND, JR. OF ASHEVILLE; DR. THOMAS PENLAND OF TAEJON, KOREA; MR. TIM PENLAND OF FAIRVIEW; AND REV. JONATHAN PENLAND OF TOCCOA FALLS, GA. HE IS ALSO SURVIVED BY 18 GRANDCHILDREN AND 15 GREAT GRANDCHILDREN. THE IMMEDIATE FAMILY WILL GREET FAMILY MEMBERS AND COMMUNITY FRIENDS AT ANDERS-RICE FUNERAL HOME FROM 7 - 9 P.M. ON TUESDAY EVENING, NOVEMBER 21, 2000. A SERVICE OF THANKSGIVING WILL BE HELD AT 2:30 P.M. ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2000, AT THE FIRST ALLIANCE CHURCH OF ASHEVILLE, 12 SOUTH FRENCH BROAD AVENUE WITH THE REV. FERRELL TOWNS OFFICIATING. INTERMENT WILL FOLLOW IN THE CANE CREEK CEMETERY IN FAIRVIEW. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS THE FAMILY REQUESTS THAT FUNDS BE SENT TO TOCCOA FALLS COLLEGE, P.O. BOX 800809 TOCCOA FALLS, GA. 30598 FOR THE REV.
