REV. JAMES E. CORDELL, 78, WENT TO BE WITH THE LORD ON SEPTEMBER 14, 2000 AFTER A BRIEF ILLNESS. HE WAS A NATIVE AND LIFELONG RESIDENT OF BUNCOMBE COUNTY. REV. CORDELL WAS ORDAINED A MINISTER FOR THE CHRISTIAN MISSIONARY ALLIANCE CHURCH IN 1958 IN PALM BEACH, FL. HE PASTORED CHURCHES IN N.C. AND ALABAMA. HE WAS A LIEUTENANT IN THE ARMY-AIR CORP AND SERVED AS A FLIGHT ENGINEER DURING W.W. II. HE WAS A LICENSED REAL ESTATE BROKER AND A BUILDING CONTRACTOR. HE WAS THE SON OF THE LATE JOHN AND JENSIE CORDELL. HE WAS ALSO PRECEDED IN DEATH BY AN INFANT SON, STEPHEN AND HIS BROTHER JOE CORDELL. SURVIVING ARE HIS WIFE OF 56 YEARS, DARLENE PHILLIPS CORDELL, FORMERLY OF SIOUX CITY, IOWA; SONS VICTOR AND DARRYL; DAUGHTER AND SON-IN-LAW JOAN AND BUZZ FELDMAN OF LONGMONT, CO AND DAUGHTER AND SON-IN-LAW CONNIE AND RICK PLEMMONS OF ASHEVILLE; GRANDDAUGHTER, RANI CORDELL OF ASHEVILLE; BROTHERS CHARLES AND BILL CORDELL AND A SISTER MARGARET BALLEW ALL OF ASHEVILLE. HE IS ALSO SURVIVED BY A WONDERFUL, LOVING FAMILY OF NIECES AND NEPHEWS AND COUNTLESS FRIENDS. FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT 2:30 P.M. SUNDAY IN THE TRINITY BAPTIST CHURCH OF WHICH HE ATTENDED. THE REVS. JERRY YOUNG AND JAMES WHITTED WILL OFFICIATE. BURIAL WILL BE IN THE PINEY GROVE CEMETERY AT FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN SWANNANOA. THE FAMILY WILL RECEIVE FRIENDS 7 TO 8:30 P.M. SATURDAY AT THE ANDERS-RICE FUNERAL HOME. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, THE FAMILY REQUEST THAT DONATIONS BE MADE TO THE TRINITY BAPTIST CHURCH BUILDING FUND, 216 SHELBURNE ROAD, ASHEVILLE, NC 28806.
