Rev. Guy A. Sluder

Asheville Rev. Guy A. Sluder 93, died Monday, March 11, 2013 at the home of his daughter Lynn Chambers and husband Ed. His passion for life and love affair with God continued during his declining health. Born on October 2, 1919 in Buncombe County he was the son of the late Wilbur A. Sluder and Elizabeth Silver Sluder. Guy was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Florence Hensley Sluder who died in 2000. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Lorene Sluder Noble and two brothers, Wayne Sluder and Charlie Sluder. Guy served in the Army during World War II with combat in Germany and Belgium. He became a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters which he remained a member for 59 years. He served as Business Agent for The Carpenters Local Union 384. He finished his career as a carpenter instructor at The Oconaluftee Job Corps Center in Cherokee, N.C. Guy was a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School Teacher and Deacon for many years. He was ordained through Mount Carmel Baptist Church to the Gospel Ministry at the age of 47. He served as pastor of Grandview Baptist Church for 18 years where he made life long friends and continued as an active member for 25 additional years. With his solid sense of right and wrong, he influenced and will continue to influence everyone who had the opportunity to interact with him. An avid farmer, he relished plowing the fields with his cherished mare Ole Nell and later his old ford tractor. He never enjoyed farming more than when working with his grandsons. Left to cherish his memory and carry on his love for the Lord; a son, Robert Sluder and wife Pat of Ossian, IN; a daughter, Lynn Sluder Chambers and husband Ed of Asheville, NC . Grandsons, Bryan Chambers and wife Dorene of Rutherfordton, NC; Brady Chambers and wife Nancy of Little Rock, AR; Eric Sluder and wife Carol of Fishers, IN; Aaron Sluder and wife Jodi of Ossian, IN; Shawn Sluder of Charlotte, NC. Great Grandchildren; Geoffrey and Mara Chambers; Emma, Harper and Caroline Chambers; Mary and Anna Sluder; Camden and Cortland Guy Sluder. Nieces; Mary Noble Williamson and husband Jack of Evergreen, AL; Jeanette Sluder Craig and husband Mike of Fairview,NC. Nephew; Charles Noble and wife Janet of Nashville, TN; and many special friends. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, March 16, 2013 in the Chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Dr. Ronnie Owen, Rev. Kenneth Huffman and Rev. Doug Huffman officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 PM preceding the service in the chapel. Burial will be in the Sluder Family Cemetery.
