Swannanoa - Rev. Charles Shelton, age 73, met the loving and precious Savior he preached about for 40 years on Friday, June 18, 2021. Charles was raised in Madison County and the eldest son of the late Everett “Bud” and Kathleen (Martin) Shelton on July 1, 1947 and was a resident of Buncombe County most of his life. He was a minister of the Gospel and pastored Vance Avenue Baptist, Laurel Branch Baptist, Inanda Baptist and Edgewood Baptist churches. He was an active member of Berea Baptist Church. He was a volunteer chaplain for the Buncombe County Sherriff’s Department for 26 years. He served our country in the US Army during the Vietnam conflict. He loved the outdoors, hunting, and especially fishing with his friends and brothers. But, his greatest enjoyment was spending time with his grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers Russell Shelton and Stewart Shelton. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Shirley (Geouge) Shelton, which he was so very proud to have by his side for 54 years. He was a loving and godly example to his daughters Charla (Michael) Weiser of Ferny Creek, Australia and Angela (Tommy) Cook of Knoxville, TN. He was an extremely proud “Pappy” of his five grandchildren Jackson, Caitlyn and Kurt Weiser of Australia, and Laura and Daniel Cook of Knoxville. He is also survived by brothers Eldwin (Shirley) Shelton and Ronald Shelton of Marshall; sisters-in-law Debbie Shelton and Marilyn Shelton of Marshall; several nieces and nephews; and special godson, Bill McGee Jr. of Fairview. Family will receive friends on Monday, June 21, 2021, from 4-7pm at Anders-Rice Funeral Home, Asheville. Rev. Shelton’s funeral service will also be held at Anders-Rice Funeral Home at 11:00 am Tuesday, June 22, 2021. Dr. Troy Rogers, Reverends Steve Honeycutt and Stanley Taylor will officiate. Interment will follow at West Memorial Park in Weaverville, with Military Funeral Honors provided by the North Carolina National Guard Honor Guard. “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the Righteous Judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.” II Timothy 4:8 In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, PO Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101-9929, a charity dear to his heart.
