Asheville - Raymond W. Spencer went home to be with the Lord on August 16, 2003. He was born in Marshalltown, Iowa on December 14, 1924 the sixth child of Floyd Bryant Spencer, Sr. and Beulah Marie Bray Spencer. He spent four years in the Marine Corps in W.W.II fighting for his country and never lost his respect for the military or his love of country. He spent part of that time under the leadership of Pappy Boyington. He spent his working years as a machinist. He is preceded in death by his parents, his four brothers, his sister and a daughter who died in 1980. He is survived by his wife of 59-1/2 years, Doris Baker Spencer, of the home. His three sons, Richard George Spencer and wife, Judy of Knoxville, TN., Rev. Larry Wayne Spencer and wife, Mary Ann of Sonoia, GA., and Timothy Ray Spencer and wife, Elizabeth of Rutherfordton, NC, one daughter, Kelli Dianne Worley and husband Dennis, of Fairview, and a half sister, Betty Mickins of Des Moines, IA. He also leaves behind six beloved grandsons and six beloved granddaughters, twelve beautiful great grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Tuesday in the Anders-Rice Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. E. B. Shoff and Robert A. Griffith officiating. Burial will be in the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Black Mtn. with the Buncombe County Veterans Council Memorial Team officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Monday at the funeral home.
