John Michael “Purvis” Purvis, loving son, brother and friend, passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2023.
John was born in Birmingham, Alabama on January 27, 1962, the son of Katherine J. Purvis and the late John S. Purvis, Jr. He grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and graduated from Reynolds High School. After high school, John moved to the mountains of Western North Carolina where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Western Carolina University. John then pursued and earned an AAS degree in Paralegal Technology.
For the past 4 years, John served as a Magistrate Judge in Buncombe County, North Carolina. Prior to this appointment, he enjoyed 24 years working with the law firm of Hensley, Cloninger and Greer, PC.
Once John moved to the North Carolina mountains, he found his home. He was an avid outdoorsman with a passion for fishing. John was also an Eagle Scout and proudly served on the staff at Camp Raven Knob in Mount Airy, North Carolina, for many summers. While he dearly appreciated all things outdoors, he was a true Alabama football fan and loved passionately cheering for his team. Making others laugh was one of his greatest joys and he will be dearly missed by all that knew and loved him.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his sister, Suzanne Purvis Shay of Winston-Salem; brother David James Purvis and wife, Amanda of High Point; niece, Ashleigh Lynn Purvis of West Haven, Connecticut and his best friend and loyal canine companion, Deacon.
