Candler - Orville Duncan MacAlpine, M.D., 89, of 6 Tiburon Place, died Saturday, November 3, 2001 at Pisgah Manor Health Care Center. A native of Bad Axe, Michigan. He was a 1940 Graduate of Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Following his graduation he served in the U.S. Army during W.W. I I from 1941 until 1946, including 13 months in Europe as an Army Doctor during the Battle of the Bulge. After his service in the military Dr. MacAlpine completed his residency in Pediatrics from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1948. Moving to Asheville in 1949 Dr. MacAlpine started his practice as an Pediatrician in the Asheville City Hall until moving to Haywood Road in West Asheville in 1954 where he continued serving the community until his retirement in 1982. Dr. MacAlpine was a member of Foster Seventh day Adventist Church where he had served as head elder for many years and as chairman of the building committee during the construction of the current church facilities. He was a former member of the Asheville-West Rotary Club for 35 years and had served as their President and on many committees. He was the son of the late Duncan A. MacAlpine and Christina McTaggart MacAlpine and the husband of Leone Dufty MacAlpine who died November 18, 1999. Surviving are his sons; James Edward MacAlpine of Asheville and Robert Thomas MacAlpine and wife, Gail Yvonne Anderson MacAlpine of Candler; grandchildren, Jill and Trent MacAlpine both of Candler; sister, Leola MacAlpine Davis of Indianapolis, Indiana. The memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Foster Seventh day Adventist Church with Pastor Erin Miller and Pastor William Ambler officiating. Private entombment will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to The Dr. Orville D. MacAlpine Memorial Fund for Community Services, % Foster S.D.A. Church, 375 Hendersonville Rd., Asheville, N.C. 28803. Our Dr. Mac, as known by all, will be remembered for his love, compassion and devotion to the many children and their families that he so proudly served.
