Norman E. Surrett

August 10, 1925 — January 30, 2015

Asheville Norman Edward Surrett, 89, of 8 East Lookout Road, passed away on Friday, January 30, 2015 at the NC State Veterans Home. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he retired as Supervisor in the Accounting Dept at the Asheville VA Medical Center following 34 years of service. He also worked part time with Ryder Truck Lines and Pilot Freight Carriers as a Rate Clerk. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #891 and of the American Legion Post #70, was a member of Groce United Methodist Church and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Mr. Surrett was the son of the late Denzil Leroy Surrett and Mamie Lee McElreath Surrett. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Willburn, Clifford and Leroy and sisters, Edna, Pearl, Mabel and Ruby. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Vestie Richey Surrett of the home; son, Edward Surrett and wife Cindy and granddaughter, Madison Alana Surrett all of Stony Point; sister, Judy Kent of Leicester and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Monday, February 2, 2015 in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Rev. Gerald Davis officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the US Navy following services at the funeral home. Burial will be held at Big Sandy United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 1:45 PM Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to: NC State Veterans Home, 62 Lake Eden Rd, Black Mountain, NC 28711.
