Noel Calloway

January 11, 1931 — October 4, 2021

Asheville – Noel Calloway, 90, of 51 Allen Avenue, went to be with the Lord on Monday, October 4, 2021 at the John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center. A native of Buncombe County, he retired following 42 years of service with the City of Asheville where he served as Superintendent of the Asheville Parking Division. He served in the US Army, was an avid sportsman in football and baseball, coached YMCA Youth Baseball, he enjoyed boxing and was a Golden Glove title holder while in the Army, and later was a Professional Boxer and promoted boxing in the Asheville area. He called Square Dancing and served as a Leader in the Clean Life Club. He always entertained with his quick wit and humor. He was the thirteenth child and seventh son of the late Henry Joseph Calloway and Celia Etta Bishop Calloway and was also preceded in death by his sisters, Nell Ashmore, Floreta Payne, Martha Taylor, Mary Thomas, Edith Miller and Grace Whitt and brothers, John Henry, Bill, Jim, Ted, Eugene and George Calloway. Surviving are his wife, Mary Joan Coleman Calloway of the home; daughters, Pamela Edwards (Tommy) of Conover and Janice Elingburg (Rick) of Asheville; grandchildren, Lisa Walker (Gene), Dr. Jan Barham (Ed), Melinda Riveiro (Greg), Greg Elingburg (Claire) and Chris Edwards; great-grandchildren, Jacob Walker (Annabeth), Joshua Walker (Katie), Sarah Walker, Sydney Barham, Laci Noel Barham, Miles Elingburg, Raymond Riveiro, Christopher Edwards and Oryan Edwards; great-great granddaughter, Madison Walker and several nieces and nephews. His special family members, Ben Medford and Karen Hite. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Saturday, October 9, 2021 in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, with his great-grandson, Pastor Joshua Walker officiating. Burial will follow in Clarks Chapel Cemetery, Weaverville with military honors to be conducted by the NC National Guard. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 AM Saturday at the funeral home.
