- MILDRED KUYKENDALL "GRANNY" BRIGGS, WIFE OF 67 YEARS TO OSCAR E. BRIGGS, SR., OF 44 HOPEDALE CIRCLE DIED MONDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2000. MRS. BRIGGS WAS THE DAUGHTER OF THE LATE W. A. AND BONNIE JUMP KUYKENDALL. SHE WAS BORN AND RAISED IN ASHEVILLE AND RETIRED IN 1987 FROM WESTWOOD BAPTIST CHURCH AS CUSTODIAN AFTER 20 YEARS SERVICE. SHE WAS A MEMBER OF WESTWOOD BAPTIST CHURCH, THE FORMER CRAVEN STREET BAPTIST CHURCH, SINCE 1928 AND OVER THE YEARS SHE HAD ENJOYED MANY POSITIONS INCLUDING CHURCH HOSTESS, A POSITION SHE HAD HELD FOR MANY YEARS, WORKED IN THE NURSERY WITH RUBY HILL, TAUGHT THE 3 YEAR OLDS, 7 YEAR OLDS AND YOUTH, SERVED AS DIRECTOR OF THE ADULT TRAINING UNION WHERE SHE LATER SERVED AS SECRETARY, CHAIRED THE KITCHEN REFRESHMENTS FOR VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL AND SUNG IN THE CHOIR FOR OVER 50 YEARS. SHE WAS A MEMBER OF THE DEGREE OF POCAHONTAS OF THE GREAT COUNCIL OF NORTH CAROLINA AND OF THE NATIONAL DEGREE OF POCAHONTAS OF THE UNITED STATES. SHE WAS A PAST GREAT POCAHONTAS OF N.C. AND WAS THE FIRST POCAHONTAS OF THE SILVER CLOUD COUNCIL #57 DEGREE OF POCAHONTAS WHEN IT WAS ORGANIZED IN ARDEN IN 1955. IN ADDITION TO HER HUSBAND, SHE IS SURVIVED BY HER CHILDREN; EARL AND DR. LINDA BRIGGS OF FAIRVIEW, PAUL AND ANDREA BRIGGS OF GREENVILLE, S.C., BURNACE AND FRANCES ROBERTS OF BLACK MOUNTAIN, AL AND PAT WILSON OF ARDEN, MIKE AND REV. LYNDA BRIGGS OF EDNEYVILLE; SISTER IN LAW, STELLA CARTER OF ASHEVILLE; EIGHT GRANDSONS, TWO GRANDDAUGHTERS, FIVE GREAT GRANDDAUGHTERS AND TWO GREAT GRANDSONS. FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT 2 P.M. FRIDAY AT WESTWOOD BAPTIST CHURCH WITH THE REVS CARSON MOSELEY AND LYNDA BRIGGS OFFICIATING. BURIAL WILL BE IN PISGAH VIEW MEMORIAL PARK. THE FAMILY WILL RECEIVE FRIENDS FROM 1 TO 2 P.M. FRIDAY AT THE CHURCH AND AT OTHER TIMES WILL BE AT THE RESIDENCE IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, MEMORIALS MAY BE MADE TO WESTWOOD BAPTIST CHURCH, SPECIAL FUND, 150 WESTWOOD PLACE, ASHEVILLE, N.C. 28806.
