Melvin Lann Letterman

August 18, 1930 — February 12, 2004

Asheville - Melvin Lann Letterman, 73, of 660 N. Louisiana Avenue, left this weary world for his place in glory Thursday February 12, 2004. Beloved son of the late Nora Hensley and Malone Letterman, he was born August 18th of the year 1930. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and returned to Asheville to marry his lifetime love, the former Barbara Ann Howell. He worked as a skilled machinist with Western Gear in California and in Asheville at McCrary and Sons until his early disability retirement in 1988. He loved the Lord and was a member of Living Hope Christian Fellowship. Mr. Letterman is preceded in death by his brothers, Marion Bud Letterman, Eugene Letterman and sister Agnes Harper. He is survived by his five children; sons, Paul Letterman and his wife Anne, David Letterman and his wife Linda and Phillip Letterman; daughters, Jan Letterman and Carol Hamlet and husband Jerry all of Asheville. Mr. Letterman had seven cherished grandchildren; Dana Humes, Jamie Davis, Jeremy, Jason, Michael and Malone Letterman and Tammy Fletcher and two loved faithful sisters, Barbara Beck of Conway, SC. and Ethel Letterman of Asheville and seven great grandchildren. Special thanks to the loving care given to our Dad by Aubrey of PSA and Wilma and Doctor Boerner. God bless you. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert L. Jackson and members of the Buncombe County Veterans Memorial Team officiating. Burial at sea will be held at a later date. The family will receive friends immediately following services at the funeral home, at other times his family will be at the home of Jerry and Carol Hamlet, 7 Bradford Pear Lane, Asheville.
