Mary Joyce Maxwell

Asheville – Mary Joyce Gass Maxwell, 69, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 at her residence. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, she was a homemaker and member of Happy Valley Baptist Church. Mrs. Maxwell was a daughter of the late James Horace Gass and Anna Lou Owens Gass, and was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Michael Hayes; grandson, Tyler Meadows; brothers, Harold, Buddy and Danny Gass and sisters, Naomi Hall and Kate Sherlin. Surviving are her husband whom she married June 3, 1967, William Luther Maxwell, Jr of the home; children, Michelle Hayes of Candler, Donnie Maxwell (Tammy) of Asheville and Kimberly Maxwell Meadows (Dwight) of Leicester; grandchildren, Brooke Lankford (Mitchell), Billy Hayes (Brooke), Donnie Hayes (Ashley) and Chloe Meadows; great granddaughters, Maggie and McKenna Lankford; sister, Jennie Sue Price of Black Mountain; brothers, Roy Gass (Vicki) of Asheville, Jerry Gass (Faye) of Easley, SC and J.C. Gass (Elaine) of Lexington and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Tuesday, September 28, 2021 in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, with Rev. Perry Burke and Rev. Terry Burke officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hills Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Monday at the funeral home.
