Mary Jo Carter

June 1, 1924 — August 9, 2010

Candler Mary Jo Davis Carter, 86, of Davis Creek Road, passed away Monday, August 9, 2010 following a short illness. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, Mary Jo was a member of Davis Chapel United Methodist Church. She was a loving wife and mother that enjoyed her wildflower garden, reading poetry and animals of all kind. Mary Jo was the daughter of the late James Turner and Bessie Byrd Davis, and the wife of James Bill Carter, Jr., who passed away in October, 2003. She was also preceded in death by three sisters: Kathleen Brigman, Jane Brooks, and Eunice Nichols. Surviving are her children: Jill Carter of Burlington, NC and Joel Carter of Wasilla, AK; grandchildren: Heather Carter and Kelly Carter (Todd); sisters: Emily Wooten and Frances Davis, both of Candler; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, with the Rev. Ron Hartman officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either Davis Chapel UMC, c/o 49 Piney Mountain Church Road, Candler, NC 28715, or to Hominy Baptist Church Daily Bread, 135 Candler School Road, Candler, NC 28715. Anders-Rice Funeral Home is assisting the Carter family.
