Martha Lee Sawyer

Weaverville - Martha Lee Sawyer, 78, formerly of 17 Grove Street died Tuesday, January 14, 2003 at the Brian Center following a period of declining health. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County. She attended Mars Hill College and was a graduate of Erskine College. Miss Sawyer retired from the National Climatic Center where she was employed for many years as a key punch operator. She was a member of Weaverville First Presbyterian Church and formerly served as a volunteer for many years with Weaverville Elementary & Primary Schools in the reading department. She was a daughter of the late Carl and Mallie Edwards Sawyer and was also preceded in death by her sisters, Lillian and Blanche Sawyer and brother, Chan Hugh Sawyer. Surviving are her sisters, Carlene Mays and husband, Gil of Forest City and Lois Rice of Asheville; brother, Julian Bo Sawyer and wife, Mary of San Antonio, TX and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Weaverville First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bruce Lax officiating. The family will receive friends following services at the church. Private burial was held Friday at the Weaverville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Weaverville First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 247, Weaverville, N.C. 28787.
