Asheville - Margaret O. Bates, 83, of 29 Marlowe Dr. died Sunday April 7, 2002 at Mountain Area Hospice following an extended illness. A native of Charleston, SC, she had resided in Buncombe County most of her life. She was a former waitress at Hot Shot Cafe, Eckerds Drug Store downtown and Merrimon Ave. and Burger King in Biltmore. She formerly attended Candler House of Prayer. She was a daughter of the late Joseph Hugh and Belle Lance Frady and wife of the late Rufus H. June Bates, Jr. who died April 2, 1987. She was also preceded in death by her former husbands, Morris Sluder and Nathan Red Johnson and a sister, Pansy Wells. Surviving are her son, William E. Bird Legs Johnson of Asheville; daughter-in-law, Sharon E. Giezentanner of Asheville; step daughters, Mary Lou Whitaker of Fairview and Linda Barnes of Candler; cousins, Joe Frady and wife, Hettie and Mary Render; grandchildren, Lindsay J. Johnson, David L Sullins, Gregory L. Sullins, Heather L. Sullins, William Whitaker, Teresa Boone, Jackie Goldsmith, Tim Whitaker and Lisa Honeycutt and several great grandchildren. Graveside service will be held at 12 noon Tuesday at Pisgah View Memorial Park with Rev. Howard Self officiating.
