GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA - LIEUTENANT COLONEL LEONARD IRA LEN BOCKMAN, U.S. ARMY, RETIRED, OF 4320 N.W. 25TH TERRACE, DIED MONDAY, JANUARY 15, 2001 AT HIS RESIDENCE FOLLOWING A SHORT ILLNESS. A NATIVE OF NEW YORK, NEW YORK, HE HAD RESIDED IN THE ASHEVILLE AREA DURING THE MID 70S AND HAS RESIDED IN FLORIDA FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS. HE WAS AN AVID SAILOR AND LOVED PLAYING TENNIS. HE RETIRED IN 1974 AFTER 27 YEARS OF SERVICE FROM THE U. S. ARMY, TRANSPORTATION CORPS WHERE HE HAD SERVED DURING THE KOREAN AND VIETNAM WARS AND FROM AUGUST 1972 TO THE TIME OF HIS RETIREMENT WAS ASSIGNED TO THE UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY AT WEST POINT WHERE HE SERVED AS CHIEF OF THE PURCHASE AND CONTRACT DIVISION. HIS HONORS INCLUDE LEGION OF MERIT AND THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL. HE WAS THE SON OF THE LATE SY AND SOPHIE SCHWARTZ BOCKMAN AND WAS ALSO PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HIS TWO BROTHERS, HERBERT AND EUGENE BOCKMAN BOTH FORMERLY OF NEW YORK. SURVIVING ARE HIS WIFE, BARBARA HEMBREE BOCKMAN OF THE HOME; DAUGHTERS, DEBORAH DELLA RAGIONE AND HUSBAND, ALDO OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA AND JENIFER LYN BOCKMAN DEARINGER AND HUSBAND, RON OF GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA; SONS, DANIEL KEITH BOCKMAN OF VENTURA, CALIFORNIA AND JOHN DAVID BOCKMAN AND WIFE, PEGGI OF GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA; GRANDCHILDREN, CHRISTINA, JESSICA, BRANDON, TREY, ANDREW, STEVEN, CHRISSY AND LINDSEY. FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT 2 P.M. WEDNESDAY IN THE CHAPEL OF ANDERS-RICE FUNERAL HOME WITH THE REV. JANET HARVEY AND MR. LARRY SCHWARTZ OFFICIATING. BURIAL WILL BE IN SLUDER FAMILY CEMETERY WITH MILITARY GRAVESIDE RITES TO BE CONDUCTED BY AN HONOR GUARD FROM THE A.C. REYNOLDS HIGH SCHOOL JR. R.O.T.C. OF WHICH COLONEL BOCKMAN ESTABLISHED IN 1977. HONORARY PALLBEARERS WILL BE LARRY SCHWARTZ, MELVIN GRECK AND HARVEY HAMMER. THE FAMILY WILL RECEIVE FRIENDS FROM I TO 2 P.M. WEDNESDAY AT THE FUNERAL HOME.
