Lewis Fowler Bryan

Lewis Fowler Bryan, 84, native of Madison County, went home to be with his Savior June 8, 2018 after a brief illness. He was the son of the late Jesse Polk Bryan and Sallie Dever Bryan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Nancy Rice Bryan, his brothers William Paige Bryan, Adolphus Vance Bryan, Ted Polk Bryan and his sister Fuscia Bryan Ramsey. Lewis was a graduate of Marshall High School and Winston-Salem Barber School. He was a Master Barber of fifty-five years, most of which at Model Barber Shop on Haywood Road, West Asheville. He was a Special Deputy with the Buncombe and Madison Countys Sheriff Departments for three decades, a Mason for 50 years, and current member of French Broad Masonic Lodge, Number 292 Marshall N.C. Lewis was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and he and Nancy were involved with the West Asheville Corp of the Salvation Army. He is survived by his children Lewis Fowler Bryan, II (Denise), Ted Metcalf Bryan (Cindy), Adolphus Gordon Bryan (Ginger), Virginia Bryan Rhyne (Don) and Steven Patrick Rice. Surviving also are his three grandchildren Lewellyn Faith Bryan, Carson Ramer Rhyne and Christine Rosemarion Rhyne. He loved the outdoors, gardening, hunting, and fishing. He was an avid reader; he was especially fond of the works of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain). He was an engaging conversationalist, captivating story teller and a trusted historian. A service to celebrate Mr. Bryans life will be held Monday, June 11, 2018 at 3 pm at Anders-Rice Funeral Home in West Asheville N.C. Service will be officiated by the Reverend Donald. R. Rhyne. Burial will follow at Green Hills Cemetery. Anders-Rice Funeral Home will also host a family visitation from 1 to 2:45 p.m. June 11, 2018. All are welcome to attend this celebration of Mr. Bryans life. In lieu of flowers, please send your donations to French Broad Baptist Association or The Salvation Army. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at Madison Health and Rehabilitation Center, Mars Hill, N.C., for the loving and compassionate care they provided and the friendships Lewis truly treasured. Additionally, the family would like to thank the staff of Mission St. Joseph for the kind care the staff extended to our family during this difficult time.
