LESTER RICHARD GREENE, 80, OF 159 OLD MARSHALL HIGHWAY DIED FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2000 AT MEMORIAL MISSION HOSPITAL FOLLOWING A PERIOD OF DECLINING HEALTH. A NATIVE OF MADISON COUNTY. HE HAD RESIDED IN BUNCOMBE COUNTY FOR OVER 50 YEARS. MR. GREENE RETIRED IN 1985 FROM SOUTHERN CONCRETE AFTER 38 YEARS OF SERVICE AS A TRUCK DRIVER. HE WAS A MEMBER OF CEDAR HILL BAPTIST CHURCH WHERE HE WAS A DEACON, CHURCH TRUSTEE FOR 39 YEARS, MEMBER OF THE CEMETERY COMMITTE FOR 29 YEARS AND FORMER SUPERENTENDANT OF THE SUNDAY SCHOOL OF WHICH HE SERVED FOR OVER 15 YEARS. HE WAS A WORLD WAR I I U.S. ARMY VETERAN OF THE 3299TH SIGNAL CORP HAVING SERVED IN SEVEN MAJOR BATTLES AND RECEIPIENT OF 7 BRONZE STARS, WORLD WAR I I VICTORY MEDAL AND GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL. HE WAS A SON OF THE LATE EARLIE EZRA AND OWA JESTINA RICE GREENE. HE WAS ALSO PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HIS BROTHERS, CECIL GREENE FORMERLY OF ARDEN AND CHESTER GREENE FORMERLY OF ALEXANDER. SURVIVNG ARE HIS WIFE, EDITH RASH GREENE OF THE HOME; SONS, LONNIE STEWART GREENE OF THE HOME; DAUGHTERS, ELAINE ELETHIA GREENE RIDDLE OF ANDERSON, S.C. AND AMY LISA GREENE HARRIS OF ALEXANDER; GRANDSON, JASON COLIN RIDDLE OF CHAPEL HILL; HIS BROTHERS WIVES, ELIZABETH GREENE OF WEAVERVILLE AND FRANCES GREENE OF ALEXANDER AND THEIR SONS, DOUGLAS GREENE AND LARRY GREENE. FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT 2 P.M. SUNDAY AT CEDAR HILL BAPTIST CHURCH WITH THE REVS JOE HONEYCUTT AND JENNIS SLUDER OFFICIATING. PALLBEARERS WILL BE FELLOW DEACONS OF THE CHURCH. BURIAL WILL BE IN THE CHURCH CEMETERY WITH MILIITARY GRAVESIDE RITES CONDUCTED BY THE ENKA HIGH SCHOOL R.O.T.C. HONOR GUARD. THE FAMILY WILL RECEIVE FRIENDS FROM 7 TO 9 PM SATURDAY AT ANDERS-RICE FUNERAL HOME. AT OTHER TIMES WILL BE AT THE RESIDENCE.
