ASHEVILLE - Kenneth Earl Higgins, 78, of 55 Lees Creek Rd. died Monday, August 13, 2001 after a long, hard fought battle with cancer. Mr. Higgins was a lifelong resident of Buncombe County and was an US Army veteran of WW II. He was in the D-Day landing and was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge. He was retired from American Enka after 43 years of service and he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and farming. He was the son of the late Albert H. and Clella Carter Higgins and was the husband of the late Kathleen Maybelle Hale Higgins. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Louise Higgins and Virginia Hoyle, and his brothers, Carroll Higgins and Charles Higgins. Surviving are his sons, Ken Higgins, Jr. and wife Empie of Asheville, Robert James Higgins of Leicester, and David M. Higgins of Asheville; grandchildren, Kirsten Higgins and Kalvin Higgins; sisters, Nancy Patton, Pauline Brookshire, Peggy Wilson, and Wanda Holt.; brother, Lawrence Higgins. Funeral services will be held at 10 am Friday in the Anders-Rice Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Ronnie Owen officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park with military graveside rites conducted by the Buncombe County Veterans Council/Volunteer Memorial Team. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 pm Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 120 Executive Park, Asheville, NC 28801.
