Asheville - Joseph Parris Rhew, Jr., 83, died Monday May 3, 2004 at St. Josephs Hospital. A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of Biltmore United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, where he holds a Fellowship Degree, was a charter member of the N.C. Sheriffs Assoc., a member of the American Legion and the Fraternal Order of Police. He was a former traffic controller for the Asheville Police Department. He was a son of the late Joseph Parris Rhew, Sr. and Lillian Miller Rhew and was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Howard and Gray Rhew. Surviving are his wife, Johanna Erica Erickson Rhew of the home; Daughter, Joette Rhew-Lewis of Asheville; Sons, Joseph Ronnie Rhew of Asheville and David Allen Rhew of Hendersonville; Sisters, Ann Garrison of Columbus, GA. and Betty Stevenson of Asheville; Brothers, Donald Rhew of Grafton, VA., Frank Rhew, Robert Rhew and Ken Rhew all of Asheville; 5 grandchildren, Ronnie, Lynndayle, Kevin and Baron Rhew and Michael Lewis and 1 great grandchild. Tyler Rhew. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory with the Rev. Randy Wood officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Animal Haven of Asheville, 65 Lower Grassy Branch Rd., Asheville, NC. 28804. A haven for abused and neglected farm animals.
