Joseph Lloyd "Joe" Carter

Fletcher - Joseph Lloyd Carter, 78, of 10 Windy Oaks Drive, passed away Friday, March 11, 2005 at his home after a period of declining health. Mr. Carter was a native of Eastern Tennessee, but had resided in Henderson and Buncombe Counties for most of his life. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in Persia and other countries in the Middle East. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Asheville where he worked for the VA Hospital in Oteen and then operated the downtown AMVETS Club during the 1960s. He retired from Steelecase, Inc. in Fletcher in 1985. Upon retirement, he divided his time between his home in Fletcher and the Big Cove area of the Cherokee community, where he made a host of friends. Mr. Carter was the son of the late William and Margaret Johnson Carter, and the husband of 51 years of Robenia Smith Carter, who passed away in August of 2001. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Eli, who died in 1996. Surviving are his children: Margaret Duncan of Fairview, Linda Brookshire of Canton, Bobby Carter of Fletcher, Billy Carter of Mountain Home, and Ricky Len Carter of Fletcher; their families, including 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; his sisters: Myrtle Lilly of Morristown, TN and Mary Ruth Mancil and husband Leo of Pitkin, LA; his brother, Charles Carter and wife Phyllis of Columbus, OH; and several nieces and nephews. A gathering of friends to celebrate and share memories of Mr. Carters life will be held between 6-7 PM Sunday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home. Floral arrangements are accepted and appreciated, or memorials may be made to Mountain Area Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.
