Johnny Rhymer

ALEXANDER - JOHNNY RHYMER, 81, OF 1516 OLD HWY #20, DIED TUESDAY MAY 22, 2001 AT ST. JOSEPHS HOSPITAL AFTER A PERIOD OF DECLINING HEALTH. A LIFELONG RESIDENT OF BUNCOMBE COUNTY. HE WAS A SON OF THE LATE ALCY GEROME AND LINA FRISBEE RYMER. . HE WAS A SERGEANT IN THE U. S. ARMY ANTI AIRCRAFT DURING WW II SERVING IN 5 MAJOR BATTLES. A 1955 GRADUATE OF ASHEVILLE BUNCOMBE COLLEGE, A MEMBER OF THE BLACKMER MASONIC LODGE # 170 ,WEAVERVILLE AND MEMBER OF THE FORMER GREEN MEMORIAL METHODIST CHURCH. HE RETIRED IN 1975 FROM THE NC DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AFTER 35 YEARS OF SERVICE AS MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR. MR. RHYMER WAS INDUCTED IN THE COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME AT MARS HILL COLLEGE IN 1957, RECEIVED NUMEROUS AWARDS FOR HIS COUNTRY MUSIC WHERE HE PLAYED THE FIDDLE, INCLUDING THE 42nd MOUNTAIN DANCE AND FOLK FESTIVAL AWARD IN 1969 AND THE BASCOM LAMAR LUNSFORD AWARD IN 1989 AND 1994. HE WAS THE FORMER HEAD OF THE FARMERS FEDERATION STRING BAND, WAS AMONG THE FIRST HOUSE BAND OPENING THE BASCOM LAMAR LUNSFORD MOUNTAIN DANCE AND FOLK FESTIVAL. HE WAS THE RECIPIENT OF THE BEST MOUNTAIN FIDDLE AWARD FOR MANY YEARS AND A CLOSE FRIEND AND COMPANION OF THE FORMER CONGRESSMAN, JAMIE CLARK FOR WHOM HE TRAVELED TO WASHINGTON, D.C. MANY TIMES TO PLAY FOR SPECIAL EVENTS. SURVIVING ARE HIS WIFE OF 60 YEARS, HAZEL RHYMER OF THE HOME; BROTHER, ELZIE PHILLIP RYMER OF ALEXANDER AND SEVERAL NIECES AND NEPHEWS. FUNERAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD AT 1:00 P.M. THURSDAY AT ANDERS-RICE FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL WITH THE REV. WORTH EMORY OFFICIATING. BURIAL WILL BE AT WESTERN CAROLINA STATE VETERANS CEMETERY, BLACK MOUNTAIN. THE FAMILY WILL RECEIVE FRIENDS 7 TO 9 P.M. WEDNESDAY AT THE FUNERAL HOME.
