Candler – Johnnie Charles Cannon, went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 1, 2021 at the Charles George VA Medical Center. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was a US Post Office Postal Clerk in Highlands, NC and lastly served as a Security Officer with Allied Security. Following retirement, one of his favorite pastimes was meeting with friends for coffee. He was a longtime member and Sunday School teacher at Mt. Olive Baptist Church where he was ordained into the ministry on August 2, 1998. He was a US Army veteran, having served overseas in Vietnam and Germany. Mr. Cannon was a son of the late Charles Homer Cannon and June Burgess Cannon and was also preceded in death by his brother, Harold Cannon and sister, Betty Joan Cannon. Surviving are his brothers and sisters, William H. Cannon (Lila) of Candler, Dorothy L. Cannon of Vienna, VA, Nancy Penley (Kenneth) of Leicester, Carolyn Ray (Bruce) and Robert L. Cannon all of Candler, Sarah Penley (Ernie) Leicester, Michael J. Cannon and Sam Cannon (Debra) all of Asheville; sister-in-law, Vava Cannon of Weaverville and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 PM Thursday, February 4, 2021 in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, with Rev. Don Penland, Rev. Matthew Templeton and Sam Cannon officiating. Private burial will be held on Friday at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 64 Mt.
