Asheville – John Paul “JP” Hiler, III had an infectious smile and a strong presence on this earth. Sadly, that presence was re-located to heaven on December 30, 2023. If Heaven has historical signs, then JP is on a tour right now asking a million questions and ducking under barricades to get a better picture.
John was born in Germany on February 2, 1972, groundhog’s day. His parents were in the air force and as a result he lived in many towns across the United States, but the one he considered his hometown was Valdosta, Georgia. John considered himself a southern man. He had a passion for history and those who knew him well know that honestly, he had a passion for almost everything. There was not a subject that someone could raise that JP didn’t have an interesting fact about. Rocks, plants, people, places- he knew something about it and was eager to tell you whether you wanted to hear it or not. He loved his daughter Elizabeth very much and she was his favorite subject. He was a man of many hobbies and interests, but nothing made him happier than seeing a historical sign and learning about why it was there.
John is survived by his daughter Elizabeth Comber Hiler, his mother Madeleine White, and his father John Paul Hiler II. Among his family there is his Aunt Renee Hiler in FL and Uncle Morris and Delores Ruel of RI as well as numerous cousins. He leaves behind numerous friends, in particular Chris Henson to whom his mother would like to thank for being there for her son in life and in death.
JP lived his life on full volume. He was loved dearly and will be missed greatly. A memorial service is being planned for his friends and family in the spring.
Anders-Rice Funeral Home is honored to serve JP’s family.
