Candler - John Henry Brown, 83, of Melton Road died Sunday, December 30, 2001 at Mission St. Josephs Health System following a period of declining health. A native of Andrews, NC, he resided in Buncombe County since the early 1940s. He was the son of the late Bob and Gussie Brown. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Air Force in the Pacific Campaign. He was a retiree of Kraft Foods Company and a forty year member and former deacon of Oak Forest Presbyterian Church. Mr. Brown was also a grower of hybrid rhododendron and azaleas. In addition to his parents, Mr. Brown was preceded in death by sisters, Willie Kate Cogdill and Nell Hicks. Surviving are his loving wife of 59 years, Evelyn Chapman Brown of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, John R. Rusty and Rosemary Brown of Candler, and Gerald K. Jerry and Patsy Brown of Candler; daughters, Janice Elaine Brown of Waynesville, Louise Brown Fontaine of Asheville, and Constance Ann Connie Brown of Candler; six grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren; brother, Joe Brown of Brevard; sisters, Mary Sue Stancil and Catherine Corley both of Anderson, SC, and Betty Pierce of Nebraska. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday in the Anders-Rice Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tim Meredith officiating. Burial will be in Pisgah View Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association of NC, 31 College Place, Asheville, NC 28801. Papa Brown was loved by everyone and never met a stranger, He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
